GREEN COVERINGS

There are different types of green which can be used when realizing coverings on the top of buildings: oblique plants, in upper or earthed; something very important to keep in mind when trying to decide which kind of hanging green you want to realize is to understand each single characteristics and differences.

Depending on accessibility, usage and relative management costs we can realize two main categories of green which are pretty different the one from the other: green roofs and hanging gardens.

GREEN ROOFS

They are usually identified as wide coverings, and have a pretty technological function. The choice is made in function of the relation costs/benefits that it produces.
Extensive green is a low maintenance system, with limited compost quantity, where a vegetation with a sedum mixture base growth and can survive in situations of deep aridity, it adapts easily to all weather conditions and it has a high regeneration ad self-propagation capacity. The advantages of this kind of covering are:

  • Range of temperature reduction
  • Protection of the covering
  • Energy saving
  • Higher acoustic insulation
  • High water retention
  • Detention of thin dusts

HANGING GARDENS

They represent the attempt to reproduce a covering garden which could as similar as possible to a traditional ground one.
They are referred to as intensive coverings.
Intensive green is a revegetation system requiring regular maintenance depending on the association of the essences used and requiring constant irrigation and nutrition. It also allows to choose different vegetal species and to have high accessibility, usage and aesthetic performances.

The advantages are:

  • Improvement of climate
  • Exploitation of unused surfaces
  • Improvement of the urban ecosystem
